Training Course Syllabus - Level II
1. REVIEW OF BASIC RADIOGRAPHIC PRINCIPLES
Interaction of radiation with matter, Maths review, Exposure
calculations, geometric exposure principles, Radiographic image quality
parameters.
2. DARK ROOM FACILITIES, TECHNIQUES AND PROCESSING
Facilities and equipment, Film loading, Protection of radiographic film
in storage, Processing of film - manual. automatic film processing, Film
- filing and storage. Unsatisfactory radiographs causes and cures. Film
density.
3. INDICATIONS, DISCONTINUITIES AND DEFECTS
Indications, Discontinuities - inherent, processing and service.
Defects.
4. MANUFACTURING PROCESSES AND ASSOCIATED DISCONTINUITIES
Casting processes and associated discontinuities - ingots, blooms and
billets. Sand casting, centrifugal casting, investment casting. Wrought
processes and associated discontinuities - forgings, rolled products,
extruded products. Welding processes and associated discontinuities -
submerged arc welding, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc
welding, flux cored arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, resistance
welding. Special welding processes – electron beam, electro-slag,
electro-gas, etc.
5. RADIOLOGICAL SAFETY PRINCIPLES REVIEW
Controlling personnel exposure, Time, Distance, shielding concepts.
Radiation detection equipment. Exposure device operating
characteristics.
6. RADIOGRAPHIC VIEWING
Film illuminator requirements, background lighting, multiple - composite
viewing, Penetrameter placement, Personnel dark adaptation and Visual
acuity. Film identification, location markers film density measurement,
film artifact.
7. APPLICATION TECHNIQUES
Multiple film techniques - thickness variation parameters, film speed,
film latitude. Enlargement and projection, Geometrical Relationships -
geometrical unsharpness, penetrameter sensitivity, source film -
distance, focal spot size. Triangulation methods for discontinuity
location, magnification localized, film handling techniques.
8. EVALUATION OF CASTINGS
Casting method review, casting discontinuities, origin and typical
orientation of discontinuities, radiographic appearance. Casting
codes/standards - applicable acceptance criteria. Reference radiographs.
9. EVALUATION OF WELDS
Welded method review, welding discontinuities, original and typical
orientation of discontinuities, radiographic appearance. Welding
codes/standards - applicable acceptance criteria. Reference radiographs
of pictograms.
10. STANDARDS, CODES AND PROCEDURES FOR RADIOGRAPHY
ASTM E94/E142, acceptable radiographic techniques and set-ups,
applicable employer procedures. Procedure/radiograph parameter
verification, radiographic reports.
