Magnetic Particle Inspection Training Course Syllabus - Level I  


1. PRINCIPLES OF MAGNETISM
Magnets, domains, lines of force, flux density, field strength, nature of fields, oersted, amp metre­¹, gauss, tesla, magnetic materials.

2. PRINCIPLES OF ELECTROMAGNETISM
Creating circular and longitudinal fields, right hand rule, effect on compass, hysteresis curves, fields created inside and adjacent to a non-magnetic and a magnetic conductor, retention of field, hysteresis.

3. PRINCIPLES OF ELECTRICITY
Currents, waveforms, voltages, values, resistance, skin effects, AC, DC, half wave and full wave rectified single and three phase, battery.

4. INTRODUCTION TO MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION AND PRINCIPLES
Basic principles, sequence of operations, limitations.

5. DEFECT DIRECTION
Maximum sensitivity, angle, size, shape, depth, breaking flux lines, area, position.

6. PREPARATION OF PARTS
Degreasing, demagnetizing, surface finish, color, background, contrast enhancement sprays, shot and sand blasting, chemical removal, platings, coatings, condition at various operations.

7. METHODS OF MAGNETISM
Current flow, magnetic flow, coil, threader bar, induction
threading coil, flexible threader bar, spiral coil, four turn split coil, permanent magnets, direction of each method.

8. TYPES OF MAGNETIZING EQUIPMENT
Bench types, AC, DC, half wave, full wave, single and three phase, universal types, power packs, portable induction units, yokes, etc., swinging field.

9. DETECTION MEDIA
Oxides, black, fluorescent, wet, dry, carrier fluids, types and brands, B.S. requirements, concentrations, permeability, particle size, shape, mobility, visibility, agitation, working temperature, contrast enhancing media, fluorescent brightness.

10. INSPECTION AND INTERPRETATION
Black, fluorescent, handling, rotation, viewing aids, light levels, light spectrum, booths, curtains, ambient or required light, corrosion protection, frequency and number of inspection.

11. DEMAGNETIZATION
AC reducing AC/DC yoke, principles, methods, equipment material, geometry, coercive force, curie point, stages carried out and reasons, residual check methods.

12. CONTROL CHECKS
Ammeters, black light, test bars and test components, inks, demagnetizers, monitors, housekeeping, ancillaries, functional checks.

13. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Trichloroethylene degreasing, carrier, fluids, components arcing, U.V.light exposure, gloves and other protective clothing, eating and drinking, smoking.

15. POST CLEANING AND CORROSION PROTECTION

16 PRACTICAL
Candidates will use typical equipment and will inspect wrought cast and weldment samples.
The use of penetrameters, comparators and other control facilities will also be encountered.

17 PRACTICAL SPECIFIC TRAINING
Practical training based on the controlling Specifications, to include control and maintenance checks, (calibration of test pieces, ammeters, plant performance checks, control of detection media etc), current selection with regard to wave form, processing parameters, sequence. This training is to be conducted at the Candidate’s place of work
