Etch Inspection
Training Course
Etch Inspection is a non-destructive test technique used to evaluate
the effects of poorly controlled secondary manufacturing processes such
as machining, grinding and heat treatment on metallic components.
The technique can be applied to materials ranging from steels to copper
alloys- although for this course we will restrict our discussion to
steels. The process involves the use of dilute acidic solutions and can
detect a variety of conditions.
The effects of inadequate
control of secondary manufacturing processes can have catastrophic
consequences. The crash of a helicopter from the Queen’s flight in 1967
is one such example.
