Training Course Syllabus - Level II
The level II Syllabus will include all of the items covered by Level I
Syllabus together with the following items
1. SURFACE CONDITIONS WHICH CAN BE DETECTED BY ETCH INSPECTION – THEIR
CAUSE, ELIMINATION AND METALLURGY
Metallurgical principles underlying the various surface conditions,
re-hardening, re-solution treatment, re-tempering and over-ageing. Over
ageing of the surface during machining grinding lapping or honing.
Non-uniform properties on through and surface hardened components prior
to and after machining operations. Localized carburizing and
de-carburizing and nitrided white layer. Effects attributable to plating
and Magnetic Particle operations. Basic good machine shop practice
2. INSPECTION AND ASSESSMENT OF ETCH INDICATIONS
Recommended conditions for inspection light levels, methods of
illumination and the use of viewing aids. Recognition of correctly
etched surface. Appearance of unacceptable surface indications. False
indications ,their causes and corrective actions. Component
configurations subject to unacceptable conditions. Interpretation of the
significance of indications.
3. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS AND THEIR LIMITATIONS.
Removal of indications by further machining grinding etc. The removal of
indications by further heat treatment. Use of controlled blasting or
peening techniques – fatigue performance. Approval of corrective
actions. Re-etching to confirm removal of indications
