These comparators are placed alongside or over indications, as appropriate and the sizes of actual indications on the surfaces of work pieces estimated from comparison with the various artificial indications. grouping or spacing of individual indications on the surfaces of the work pieces can also be estimated. When using the comparators in conjunction with either penetrant testing or magnetic particle inspection it is necessary to remember that the indications on the work pieces are significantly larger that the actual openings of surface open discontinuities and defects. This is particulary marked in the case of penetrant indications after the proper application of developers.
